Do you have to be sold on the merits of loving yourself? Does there have to be some end game that makes the efforts worthwhile? What is that makes self-love so challenging for so many of us ~ especially the Service Providers of the world?

I’ve said it before, most Service Providers I know, including myself are way more comfortable with the act of giving than receiving. When something is going wrong in the lives of those around us, we can become very uncomfortable and it’s near impossible to stop ourselves from trying to fix it. Even if we can hold ourselves back from acting, we are likely wound up in an internal knot. Holding our breath and clenching the proverbial wheel with white knuckles until everything settles down again. We might be keeping our fingers out of the pot, but we are energetically waiting for the boil.

To engage in the energy of self-love requires a well-developed capacity to receive. It may seem that it would be natural to receive loving energy from ourselves but if we are closed off or receptively challenged, it doesn’t matter where the offering is coming from, it simply cannot get through.

Lately, I have noticed this message over and over in various formats but at the core it reminds me that I “cannot give from an empty vessel.” I got to thinking ~ why does filling our own cup have to be directly related to giving of ourselves? Is it only valuable to shower ourselves with loving energy so that we can then give more?

I have been caught in that trap ~ well, probably most of my life, to be honest. When I first became keen on improving my health and well being, eating better, working out, giving up some vices, I was initially motivated by the desire to feel better. As I got into a new lifestyle and new practices and started to feel more comfortable in my own skin, I noticed a huge surge of energy. I had better mental clarity and a greater capacity for focus. I could get lots done and I did.

As some of you might relate, eventually the activities that were initially fuelled by desire morphed into just another chore. During the heightened energetic phase of my transformation, I took on additional commitments and responsibilities. One day, I realized that if I did not engage in the self-care activities that made up my routine, the whole structure would tumble. Now the motivation to take care of myself was solely focused on my being able to keep going with all that I had put on my plate.

I had to take care of myself so that I could take care of others ~ respond to others ~ meet my obligations. What initially felt like an act of self-love had turned into another reason to crack the whip at my own back.

Where’s the love in that?

The truth is that love is an energy ~ it is a feeling ~ and it is ultimately an act. Love itself does not differentiate between who and what is worthy of its gifts. Love does not judge and determine when to show up and how much to offer. With love, there are no limits. In love, there is no requirement to be met. Love is free and available to each of us at all times. This energy can be translated in a variety of ways ~ it doesn’t always look the same. It is however, divine in nature and unconditional in character.

If our desire is to love through thought, word, action and interaction, then we must include ourselves in the transaction. As we become more receptive to the energy of love, we will first reap the benefits within our own hearts and from there it naturally overflows to everything around us ~ including other people. It is not necessary to alter ourselves in any way or to prove to love that we will share its blessing. An open channel for love is inherently receptive and expressive all at once.

There are only two commitments involved:

1. The willingness to become the open channel
2. The commitment to include yourself in your demonstrations of love

Love will take it from there.

Have you ever sat there wondering how you ended up where you are? I mean, you can clearly see that you set your sights on a certain destination and now you have arrived in that place only to be feeling like you don’t belong there ~ scratching your head perplexed and consumed with self-doubt.

“If they only knew” you think to yourself, “I would be outta here in a second.” I have uttered these words to myself on more than one occasion. Every time I stepped into a new work situation, I would find that my previous sense of confidence in my ability to ace the job would fly out the window and I’d be left with this pit in my gut and an overwhelming sense of not having a clue what I was doing.

Of course, we rarely like to admit those moments to the people around us. We want to present an appearance of self-assuredness and confidence. We want the people around us to feel they can rely on us and we will come through on our promises and commitments. So, we stumble around for a while hoping that no one will notice that we are teetering on the edge of our personal pit of insecurity.

Riding the Wave of Learning

As we learn to ride the wave of the learning curve, we come to recognize that time and experience does begin to ease the anxious edge of entering into novel situations. Over time we become more comfortable with our role and we develop a certain amount of competence and efficacy. And if we are lucky, we get to enjoy this sense of security for a little while before the next adventure crosses our path.

At the very least, each episode of Imposter Syndrome ~ the sense that you have found yourself in a space that you are not prepared for and feel as though you cannot fulfill ~ and it’s just a matter of time before everyone else sees it too ~ at the very least, each bout can remind us that we have been there before and we have found our way through and expanded our comfort levels many times before. And this can be helpful however, rarely completely calms the nerves associated with Imposter Syndrome when we are in its grips.

What is Your Authentic?

I recall a very powerful conversation with a counselor I saw for many years. I had just begun research work on the Conscious Service Approach. One of the workshop sessions had centered on authenticity and the connection this had with integrity. How do we show up in real and genuine ways, being true to ourselves and in alignment with all aspects of our being ~ mind, body, soul? The conversation had lingered with me long after the session wrapped up.

I found myself wondering with my counselor ~ was I being authentic? Was I behaving with integrity? Why did I feel so out of place if I was being true to myself and my beliefs and values? What was all this discomfort about? Her response to me was profound and has reverberated in my life ever since. She pondered if it was in fact still authentic and in integrity when making major changes in life to feel out of place and uncomfortable. Wasn’t that true and authentic? Didn’t it make sense that we would feel out of place and just plain weird when we are in the midst of recreating ourselves and expanding into a new place?

I had been confusing authenticity and integrity with unwavering confidence and the presentation of expertise. Authenticity and integrity also means vulnerability and a willingness to be seen and learn in front of others.

So, how do we maintain integrity when we feel like an Imposter in our own lives?

• Remember that you are learning something new and transformative. Be patient and gentle with your process.
• Pay close attention to even the smallest things you learn each day. This will help you more clearly see your progress.
• Take note of the times where you miss the mark, but don’t dwell there. Take what you have learned and build upon it.
• When you screw up, admit it promptly AFTER you take a bit of time to show yourself the compassion you need. This frees up your energy.
• Determine your resources and then ask for help and guidance when you feel safe ~ as soon as possible. Sharing the load will ease your burden.
• Hold space for the feelings you intend to experience in this new space you have stepped into ~ confidence, creativity, joy, energized focus, contribution. Whatever, it might be, keep tuning into your intended emotional experience until you start to feel it.

It’s not all about improvement. Yes, we are constantly in a state of evolution ~ of change ~ of growth. Two steps forward, one step back as we trip along the path of life. Other times, we are skipping or running at breakneck speed. At times, we move with the swiftness of a sloth. It is all movement ~ it is necessary.

And it is not about being more than or better than what we are right now in this moment. It is about fully being who we are in our present state with the full acceptance and unconditional love of our own hearts.

Often when I speak about self-reflection with people, the main thing that seems to come to mind is this emphasis on thinking back over the day, identifying what happened, and looking for how it could have been done better.

Well, what about those things that you rocked today? How much time do you spend feeling good about what you excelled at? What kind words fill your self-talk to let you know that your accomplishments are recognized ~ not by anyone else ~ recognized, honored, and appreciated by you ~ and only you.

This is just as important ~ in fact, perhaps, more important ~ than this constant striving to have evidence that we have improved. You do know that life doesn’t move in a straight line right? Some days are filled with opportunities to stretch and grow leaving us with very little evidence of success ~ other than the fact that we are still breathing. Other days are easier and filled with opportunities to be engaged in those things that come naturally to us.

Don’t Make It Harder Than It Is

In our society, we tend to place more importance on the energy of suffering, struggling, and hard work. We have a hard time honoring and celebrating anything that comes to us with ease and grace. What the hell is that all about? Is it me or can you relate to that too?

It’s like it just doesn’t mean as much if it wasn’t borne of some kind of self-sacrifice and blood, sweat and tears. Like, if we suddenly had a powerful moment of insight and inspiration and became able to create or accomplish something in an instant that had the potential to be more labour intensive, it doesn’t have as much value. This is a line of thinking that I for one, am ready to cut loose.

The Universe does not say that it is necessary to struggle and work ourselves into the ground before we become deserving of what it is our hearts desire. That’s a human construct whose time has come.

I have noticed when it comes to being of Service in the world it is easy to be focused on external evidence that your actions have had some positive impact. We secretly hope that what we are doing is helping other people. Whether we are aware of it or not, we might get stuck on equating our self worth and the value of our service with visible changes in other people. This is a slippery slope, my friend.

Transformation is often slow at the best of times ~ slow and subtle ~ taking years before we can see significant progress. It is messy and often doesn’t look like anything at all. That’s why it is so important that we learn to grasp the minute shifts that occur, the tiniest of victories that we win, and the simplicity of living life with honor and grace. And the easiest place to find this evidence is always going to be within. And the beauty is that the better we get at recognizing our own value and worth in the most basic ways, the easier it will be to see it in others.

We’ve spent enough time focusing on what we did wrong, how we can be better, where we need to grow and improve. Let’s shift gears and put all our energy into supporting our natural gifts and talents and showering ourselves with our own admiration and gratitude.

Don’t worry about becoming conceited. This is a private dialogue with your own heart. This kind of self-encouragement does not overlook your humanity, it embraces it. This kind of self-love is an essential ingredient in the recipe for self-confidence ~ and that my friend has nothing to do with arrogance.

If you have been a Service Provider in the traditional sense of the word, you have likely found yourself employed within the health care and human services system. You derive an income from this work and you are tasked with the fulfillment of organizational missions and mandates. Sometimes, this aligns with your personal value system and motivations for contribution. And sometimes, it does not.

You may be longing to more fully integrate your personal ideals into the service you offer. Perhaps, you have been recently inspired to learn more about alternative practices and approaches that may not fit in with the western based ideologies of the agency you work for. This is often true for Service Providers who find themselves curious about spirituality and energy-based modalities. If you’re lucky, your organization supports your interests and offers opportunities for you to share what you are learning and incorporate your discoveries into the service you provide. However, this is often not the case.

I recall when I first became interested in the spiritual element of service provision. At first, I sought to offer courses through my local college where I had been employed on a part-time basis. I pitched my idea of developing and integrating more courses regarding spirituality into the existing health care and human services programs. I was told that the college was a secular organization and the spiritual focus of my suggested courses would not align with the current approach.

Some time later, I began to share my new learning within the community based rehabilitation program I worked for. And they received my suggestions for integration with open arms creating space for team discussions, professional development activities, and a new discourse related to the agency’s policies and procedures.

Sometimes, you just have to keep trying.

Other times, your desire to contribute from your unique perspective may lead you in a different direction. Your longing to connect with like-minded people and to offer service from a place of personal integrity may inspire you to strike out on your own.

And many Service Providers these days are doing just that. They are moved by a budding entrepreneurial spirit that motivates them toward a more independent career aligned with their deepest personal values and what it means to them to be of service in the world.

Honor Yourself with the Gift of Preparation

This journey requires courage, commitment, and stamina. Resources and supports are necessary to take the dive into private practice. As a trailblazer, you will find yourself managing aspects of daily operations that until now had occurred behind the scenes ~ the responsibility of someone else.

For many Service Providers, this is when they come face to face with the challenge of blending business with compassion. We don’t like to talk about money when it comes to serving humanity. The closest we come to that when we work in traditional settings is to focus on the lack of funding. At times, we may struggle with our need to derive a salary and our desire to be altruistic in our approach.

And it is this clashing of philosophical ideals that creates one of the greatest challenges faced by Service Entrepreneurs. It was one thing to say that funding cuts have limited what you can offer and another thing altogether to increase your rates for the services you provide. That’s a pretty big leap.

But it is necessary for all Service Providers, whether traditional or alternative, self-employed or working for an organization, to embrace the desire to not only survive; but to thrive in this world. And it is possible to create this space without compromising a compassionate approach. Money can’t buy you love, after all.

How do you straddle the line between altruistic service and abundance?

You are blessed with the gift of shifting perspectives and altering your point of view. The more you practice using this innate talent, the easier it becomes to tap into it when you are desperately in need of a fresh take on something … or someone. There are two inner experts that you can call on to help you.

Your Experienced Novice

We often use the term “beginner’s mind” to remember to look at things from a new perspective ~ especially, when we are starting to believe that we already know all there is to know. This creates a new energetic space within which we can grow and expand.

Incorporate your Experienced Novice when you are struggling to see something in your own life from a different angle. Perhaps, you are trying to create change in your world ~ maybe, you want to give something up or start something new. And you can’t seem to escape that voice that reminds you how you have failed in the past or how what you are considering doing didn’t work for you before so why would it now?

It is so easy to get stuck in our ways ~ create patterns in our life that we cling to long past their expiry date. Your Experienced Novice is there to help you see that the possibilities really are unlimited. When you feel like you will never experience anything different in your life, your Experienced Novice is there to help you spice things up and push the boundaries of your life just as much as you need to in order to revitalize your view.

When it comes to providing service to other people, the Experienced Novice will remind you to learn about a person through the information they share with you ~ and sometimes, what they might be holding back. Either way, your Experienced Novice wants you to rely on all your experience has taught you without losing your ability to think creatively outside of the box and without your capacity to be present to the personal story and subjective interpretation that someone is sharing with you.

The Active Witness

If you are into mindfulness at all, you are likely aware of the benefits of becoming the observer in your life. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a leading expert in mindfulness meditation, suggests that we watch our thoughts float through our minds like balloons or clouds ~ noticing that they are there ~ but not becoming attached to them in any way. There is a sense of freedom when we can simply observe our thought patterns and let them go just as quickly as we notice them.

In your role as a Service Provider, you are aware of how important your observation skills are when it comes to gathering vital information and remembering to see those you serve through a holistic lens.

Your Active Witness is the part of you who can engage with your observations in a dynamic way that leads to breakthrough both within your level of self-awareness and your capacity to be more present in your service to others. Your Active Witness questions interpretations you might be reaching as you observe what is happening within you and around you. Your Active Witness does not judge the meaning you attach to any of your observations, rather their job is to challenge any conclusions you may have that are not serving you or others.

When the Active Witness is involved, you will notice a greater capacity to move past any obstacles in your thinking and any limitations you may uncover in your belief system so that you come more quickly to an expanded view of any situation that has captured your attention in the moment.

The Active Witness assists your Experienced Novice to keep asking the questions from a place of genuine curiosity and a pure desire to understand. This combination is powerful!

Healing is optimal when we follow the natural rhythms of our lives, our environments and our bodies. And that is what Ecopsychology is all about.

We can learn so much about life and growth by observing nature ~ the seasons and the cycles. And we can tap into that divine wisdom when we connect more deeply with nature and spend time there.

Breathe in the air. Walk barefoot in the grass. Feel the wind in your hair. Hug a tree if you like.

Nature demonstrates ultimate patience with the process. Nothing is forced. Nothing can be controlled. As human beings, we often try to predict and manage our environment ~ looking at weather reports, fretting about inclement weather, lamenting the stuff we don’t enjoy. It can often be one of the first topics of conversation when we connect with others.

But no matter what, if it’s going to rain, you hope you have your umbrella. Nothing we can do about it.

And our own growth and evolution and healing is much like that. We can do things that support our wellbeing and yet, there is an invisible and intangible process that requires patience and trust.

To everything there is a season.

Finding Your Personal Rhythm

If we honor what nature teaches us, we come to learn how to listen more carefully to our inner wisdom and the natural cycles of our being. We eat when we are hungry, rest when we are tired, work when there are things to be done, play when we need rejuvenation, laugh when we are joyful and cry when we are sad.

To move in harmony with the needs of our physical bodies and the desires of our souls is what we are meant to do. We have all the information we need contained within our natural existence.

Ecopsychology reinforces this perspective and allows us to capture this internal guidance and wisdom that is available to us to make “sense” out of what we are experiencing.

We become better equipped to sense on deeper levels what it is we need in each moment.

This is an invaluable gift for anyone who is drawn to practices that connect one with nature. And extremely precious for those of us who identify as Service Providers. We are often so intent on determining and responding to the needs of those around us that we become somewhat disconnected from our personal nature and the rhythms of our own hearts.

This is key to developing practical self-care plans as well as tuning into the deeper soul wisdom that can guide your experience as a Service Provider and enhance the quality of your interactions with others.

Honoring your personal rhythm puts you in better touch with your intuitive guidance, your creative energy and your natural capacity for personal health. All the wisdom you need is contained within.

How do you honor the natural rhythm of your being?

Wrong? Who ~ me? No. What do you mean?

Most of us are not really comfortable with being wrong ~ especially, if someone else is witness to it. We fight and struggle to prove our point in attempts to persuade others to see it our way. We cling to our conviction that we are right.

Sometimes, it is necessary to stand by the truth of our convictions ~ to hold firm to what we know to be right inside our own hearts.

And other times, it’s just futile to refuse to let go of our need to be right. This is true when our determination is propelled by our ego and our need to avoid losing face.

It is especially true when what we are clinging to is not in our best interest ~ when being wrong would actually be in our favour.

Sometimes, we drag around the evidence we have gathered in our past to perpetuate situations that we no longer desire in our present. We stay loyal to worn out beliefs and ideologies because that’s “just the way it has always been.” We’ve seen it proven time and again. It’s almost as though we become afraid to expect something different. We stay committed to being right about what we don’t want.

Imagine the freedom we would experience if we could release this ego based need to be right ~ especially about everything that feels wrong in our lives.

When judgment arises about others, or ourselves we are provided with a perfect opportunity to practice being wrong. How might our sense of self-esteem be altered if we became willing to be wrong about what we perceive as personal shortcomings? How might our relationships with others transform if we considered that maybe, just maybe, we were wrong about the other person?

If you catch yourself living by a self-defeating belief system, tap into your desire to be wrong for a moment. There is a sense of relief when we realize that we could be totally mistaken about something that has controlled us and kept us down for years. In this moment of relief, we become able to see a new possibility ~ one that feels more right in our hearts.

I hereby recant my allegiance to small-minded thinking, perceptions of lack and limitation, and any belief in punishment.

Are you someone who is driven by the energy of your own soul? Do you follow your personal curiosities? Maybe, you find that honoring your personal desires and in-the-moment needs is the most powerful motivating force in your life.

Or maybe, you find yourself chasing after one dangling carrot after another. Everything that fires you up is external to you ~ driven by other people and the hope of some outer achievement.

Perhaps, you can relate to both experiences. Most of us do have a variety of motivating factors that propel us toward the experiences and activities ~ the people and the projects ~ that we wish to manifest in our lives.

Determining what holds the most meaning and energy for us is an important aspect of understanding how we operate and refining what we commit ourselves to both within our beings and outside.

As a Service Provider, what motivated you toward this role? Regardless of how long you have identified as a Service Provider, can you recall what it was like for you when you first heard that call? Do you still hear the call? Has it changed over time? And if so, how?

What motivates us does change over time and through life experience. If we are paying attention, we will notice when a shift occurs to tell us that what was once extremely important no longer holds the same weight.

Is it An Inside Job?

I find it super helpful to look at motivators from an intrinsic and extrinsic perspective. Intrinsic motivators are those things that exist within us ~ such as passion and curiosity ~ unconditional love and desire for connection. These motivators have nothing to do with the object of our affections or the target of our curiosities, but rather, are simply about expression of the feeling. Intrinsic motivation is about the experience of the moment as opposed to any specific outcome.

Extrinsic motivators are those things that exist outside of us that fuel our decision to act. Things like the pay cheque, the admiration, the attention from someone else, and the approval of others. Extrinsic motivators are very focused on specific outcomes. We are doing something for the sake of getting something in one form or another as opposed to doing it for the sheer joy of the experience.

Most of us have a combination of both types of motivators at play in our lives. So, this is not about judging our motivators, it is about seeking clarity around what motivates us so we can honor those that are most powerful in our lives.

What motivates us is also connected to our deepest values so it is well worth the time to reflect upon what you hold most dear in your life at this time. As it is with motivating factors, our value priorities change over time and through experience as well. What I valued as a teenager may not be as important to me anymore as I step into the second half of my life.

Reviewing the most powerful values for you right now creates clarity around the motivators that will hold the most energy for you now.

As we find congruence between our values and motivators, we become more able to connect to our sense of inspiration, as it exists right now. In this place of awareness and alignment, a clear path opens toward your personal philosophical approach to life and service. And this makes way for a declaration of your intended contribution.
