Commitment. Liberation or Bondage? Fluid or carved in stone? I have been pondering the role of commitment in my life over the past few months. I was encouraged by an energy healer this summer to focus on the idea of commitment and its role in my life. My focus was to center on my commitment to myself as opposed to the commitments I felt I had to other people or things in my life. This suggestion became a powerful catalyst to the discovery of my current truth.
Simplicity
Each time I felt the urge to worry about how I was upholding all of my commitments to other people, I came back to myself. What do I really want? How do I really feel? What matters most to me?
I can tell you that what seemed like a very simple practice gave way to some monumental shifts in my life. Once I accepted and honoured the truth of my commitments to myself, I gained great depths of clarity. Without the nagging and incessant voice of “what if” and the worry of how living my commitments to myself would impact others, I felt a sense of freedom.
In that place, I was actually more able to approach the people who would be affected by these shifts in a more loving manner as opposed to meeting them with resentment and bitterness. It allowed me to have more compassion for those affected by my choices.
The Truth Really Will Set You Free
When you commit to your truth without all the added clutter, you will feel lighter in your body and clearer in your mind. You will find that those actions that once felt near impossible are suddenly accomplished with ease and grace. This is not to say that you won’t experience challenging moments, but you will find that the power of your commitment to yourself will give you the courage you need to take the next steps. You will become stronger. You will be supported.
This experience radically changed my previous perceptions of commitment. I had always believed that commitment was something that never changed. I realize now that our commitments are something we need to examine and re-negotiate on a continual basis. Sometimes, we can find ourselves upholding commitments that really have no meaning at all. I think it is safe to say that in these situations, the truth of the commitment will eventually be revealed.
Because, you see, commitment is an all or nothing kind of thing! We can say we are committed to something or someone but if even one little part of us is not present to this commitment, it will not be maintained. Eventually, the truth of our commitment will rise to the surface. Either you’re in or you’re out!
You are Free to Change Your Mind
Commitments change. You may make a commitment with your whole heart and soul at one point in your life, only to find that it no longer holds power for you later on. This is okay. You do not have to uphold commitments that no longer fit or serve you in the highest way; you are free to change your mind; you are free to renegotiate.
When you harness the power of full commitment in your life, you will see how this energy can propel you forward; move you into the most inspiring places of contribution and connection. You will find that things seem to fall into place more gracefully and that you feel equipped with all that you need.
This power of commitment is something you can actively utilize in all aspects of your life – your relationships, your career, your health and so on. Check in with yourself frequently to review your current commitments. Reevaluate and renegotiate where it is required. Each time you do this, you will come to greater depths of clarity and simplicity; two ingredients that will help you to honour your true commitments in life.
From the perspective of conscious service, the power of commitment can assist you to connect more closely with your divine gifts, those contributions you hope to make and the experience of service you wish to create.
